NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Seton Hall women's golf team fired a 12-over-par, 300, the fourth-best team score of Sunday's final round, to finish tied for fourth place at the 2012 Yale Women's Intercollegiate.
The Pirates entered the day in eighth place, but were able to pass Boston College, Longwood and Princeton to tie host Yale for fourth place. Their 300 is the Pirates' second-best single-round team score in program history. It's Seton Hall's best single-round team score on a par-72 course.
Seton Hall finished the highly-competitive tournament with a 45-over-par, 306-303-300-909, 50 strokes behind the team champion, Nova Southeastern, which won the three-day event by 26 strokes. The Pirates' lone BIG EAST competition was Rutgers, which finished ninth, 23 strokes behind Seton Hall.
The Pirates were again paced by super-sophomore Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) who notched her third top-10 finish in three tournaments this fall. Kruse finished eighth among 89 individual golfers, leading the Pirates with a 1-over-par, 73, in Sunday's final round. For the three-day event, she was 4-over-par with a 77-70-73-220.
"A fourth place finish on a challenging course with a great field is a major accomplishment for us," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "We played really terrific golf today, and for Ali, Hannah and Megan to all come in at 3-over-par or better shows just how ready were to finish this tournament on a high note. This team is maturing in front of my eyes and I am excited at what the future might bring it."
Junior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) was again incredibly consistent in round three, adding a third, 3-over-par, 75, to finish tied for 17th overall with a 9-over-par, 75-75-75-225.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) turned in her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 3-over-par, 75. The freshman ended up tying for 30th place overall with a 14-over-par, 76-79-75-230.
Junior Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) also had her best round of the three-day event. The steady veteran logged a 5-over-par, 77, to finish tied for 38th place overall. Cantũ shot an 18-over-par, 78-79-77-234 for the tournament.
Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) rounded out the Pirates' scoring with a 32-over-par, 85-81-82-248.
Seton Hall will now take two weeks off before heading back out onto the course. The Pirates will make the short drive down the New Jersey Turnpike for the Rutgers Women's Invitational, Oct. 5-6. Seton Hall will be seeking its fourth straight top-five team finish.
