KINGSTON, R.I. - The Seton Hall volleyball team swept its third straight opponent after a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) victory over Hartford on Friday afternoon. The Pirates continued their torrid start to the year and are now 7-1.
SHU has now won 10 consecutive sets, dating back to the fifth game of its win over Binghamton on September 1.
Sophomore Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the team with 16 kills and posted a .441 attack percentage. Senior Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was a stalwart in the middle, recording six blocks.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) continues to climb the career dig list after registering 11 in the match. She now has 1,238 digs to move past Laura Romeika for third in program history.
The Hawks (3-7) scored the first three points of the contest, but SHU stormed back with a 6-1 rally to take a lead they would never relinquish. A Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) ace extended the margin to 17-12 and the Pirates went on for the set win.
Set two started out competitive as well until Seton Hall scored four consecutive points to break open a 17-10 advantage. Hartford refused to go quietly, pulling within 21-18, but the Pirates slammed the door with four unanswered to push the Hawks to the brink.
In the third, Seton Hall doubled up Hartford, 8-4, only to see its lead shrink to one point. The Pirates quickly regained control after a Stacey Manthorpe spike sparked a big 9-1 outburst to put SHU firmly in the driver's seat and closed the door on the Hawks.
The Pirates wrap up the tournament against Rhode Island on Saturday, September 8, at 3:00 p.m.
