SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied her sixth triple-double of the season as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team outlasted Villanova, 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13), on Friday to earn their first BIG EAST victory of the season.
In a match of statistical superlatives, Manthorpe's 18th career triple-double stands out. She recorded season-highs of 51 assists and 14 kills to go with 18 digs.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) tallied a season-high 30 digs and narrowly missed a double-double with eight assists. Her digs are the second-highest single-match total for any BIG EAST player this season.
Junior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) picked up her sixth double-double of the season with a match-high 18 kills to go with 15 digs. She also had five blocks and a team-best .326 attack percentage.
Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) and Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) also reached double-figures in kills with 13 and 11 respectively.
Villanova (10-7, 2-2) scored the first point of the match, but it was the last Wildcat lead of the first set. Seton Hall scored the next four points to take a 4-1 lead. Villanova cut the Pirate lead to one at 13-12, but The Hall scored the next four points and took a 17-12 lead on a kill by Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.). The Wildcats again cut into the lead, trailing by just three at 21-18, but Seton Hall scored the final four points of the first set to win, 25-18.
Set two was much closer with neither team gaining a lead of more than three points. With the set knotted at 19, Villanova scored the next three points and never looked back, winning set two, 25-22, to tie the match at one set apiece.
Seton Hall (7-9, 1-3) dominated set three before Villanova made a late run. Holding a slim 9-8 lead, the Pirates went on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 23-10 advantage. The Wildcats countered with a 9-1 run to cut Seton Hall's lead to 24-19, but it was too little, two late as the Pirates won set three, 25-19, to take a two-sets-to-one-match lead.
The Wildcats however, bounced back in set four, gutting out another tight set to even the match at two sets apiece. Set four featured seven lead changes and 10 ties before Villanova finally took control late to win, 25-22.
With a raucous Walsh Gym crowd cheering on, Seton Hall grabbed a 10-6 lead on a kill by Hansen, but Villanova responded with three straight to cut the Pirate lead to 10-9. With the set tied at 13, a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe put Seton Hall in match point, and her sister Stacey ended the match with a kill of her own.
It was the Pirates' eighth five-set match in 16 matches this season. Seton Hall is 4-4 in those matches.
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they host Georgetown at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
