
Volleyball Tames Wildcats, 3-1

VILLANOVA, PA. - Junior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a double-double, matching her career-high with 18 kills and 15 digs as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated Villanova, 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 26-24, 25-21), on the road on Saturday.The suddenly streaking Pirates have now won five of their last six matches and have reached the .500 overall mark for the first time this season at 10-10. They're 3-4 in the BIG EAST Conference.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied a match-high 47 assists to go with 16 digs for her team-leading 15th double-double of the season. Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) recorded a team-best 23 digs.
Sophomores Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) also reached double-digits in kills. Grammer had 10 kills and a season-high five blocks, while Hansen had 11 kills.
Villanova scored three of the first four points of the first set, but the Pirates stormed back and took a 7-5 lead on blocks by Grammer and Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.). In a back-and-forth set that saw 12 ties and six lead changes, Seton Hall took control with the score tied at 23. Shelbey Manthorpe's kill put the Pirates in set point and a kill by Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) won the set for Seton Hall, 25-23.
Set two however, was dominated by the Wildcats. Seton Hall never led as Villanova scored the first three points of the second set. Leading 3-2, Villanova went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 11-3 lead and never looked back. The Wildcats tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-16 victory in set two.
Set three was another marathon. With the score tied at nine, Seton Hall went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. But Villanova rebounded and played the Pirates closely for the remainder of the set. Tied at 24, Stacey Manthorpe's kill put Seton Hall in set point, and blocks by Grammer and Rubin gave The Hall a 26-24 set three victory.
The Wildcats scored the first point of set four, but the Pirates responded with four straight to take a 4-1 lead. Ahead 10-8, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points and Rubin's kill gave the Pirates a commanding 14-9 advantage. Leading 16-11, The Hall scored four of the next five points to take a 20-12 lead. Villanova scored the next four points to cut the Pirate lead to 20-16, but Seton Hall regrouped to win set four, 25-21, and win the match, three-sets-to-one.
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it hosts Stony Brook in a non-conference match. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
