
Volleyball Falls Short Against Butler, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied her seventh triple-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Butler, 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 17-25), on Friday.The loss snaps Seton Hall's four-match winning streak and drops the Pirates to 11-11 overall and 3-5 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Seton Hall played significantly better this time around against Butler, having been swept in Indianapolis earlier this season. Four Pirates reached double-figures in kills in a balanced offensive attack.
Manthorpe's triple-double is the 19th of her career. She recorded a team-high 42 assists to go with 10 kills and 10 digs. Manthorpe also had a team-best .370 attack percentage as her 10 kills came without a single attack error.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had another strong defensive match, leading all players with 26 digs.
Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied her fourth straight double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) also reached double-figures in kills with 12 and 10 respectively.
A kill by Hansen gave Seton Hall an early 5-2 lead in set one, but the Bulldogs rebounded and eventually tied the set at 10. Back-to-back kills by Shelbey Manthorpe pushed the Pirates back in front, 13-10, but Butler rallied again and tied the set at 14. With the score locked at 17, Butler took control and finished the set with an 8-2 run to win set one, 25-17.
With the score tied at seven in set two, Butler went on a 6-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. But the Pirates rallied, scored six straight and Shelbey Manthorpe's kill put Seton Hall in front, 14-13. Trailing 19-17, the Pirates rallied again with a 6-1 run to take a commanding 23-20 lead, and went on to tie the match with a 25-22 set two victory.
Riding momentum gained in set two, the Pirates scored the first four points of set three. Butler rebounded and tied the set at eight. It was the first of nine ties in a close set three. Seton Hall led 21-19, but Butler responded with four straight points to take a 23-21 lead and went on to edge the Pirates, 25-22 in set three.
Seton Hall again played strong early in set four and took a 9-6 lead on a Butler attack error. The Bulldogs however, responded with a 6-1 run to take a 13-10 lead and never looked back. The Butler lead ballooned to six points at 18-12, and Seton Hall never got closer than five points the rest of the way. Butler won set four, 25-17 and took the match, three-sets-to-one.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, October 26 when they host Xavier. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
