SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated NJIT, 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20), on Wednesday night.With the victory the Pirates evened their overall record at 12-12.
Junior Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) led Seton Hall with nine kills and three blocks. Both Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) and Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) had eight kills, with Grammer registering a team-high .636 attack percentage.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) recorded a match-high 17 digs in the victory.
Thirteen Pirates saw action in the match as a convincing win in set one enabled head coach Allison Yaeger to provide some playing time to some of the team's reserves. Jamie Froning (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded a career-high six kills, with just one kill in two sets. Sam Duncan (Tucson, Ariz.) notched career-highs of six assists and five digs.
NJIT (7-12) scored the first point of the match, but Seton Hall quickly evened up the set and took a 2-1 lead on a kill by Froning to take a 2-1 lead and never trailed again. Leading 7-6, the Pirates went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 15-6 advantage. An ace by Duncan enabled Seton Hall to double-up the Highlanders at 24-12, and the Pirates went on to win set one, 25-16.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair that saw 12 ties and five lead changes. With the score knotted at 20 points, NJIT scored five of the last six points to win set two, 25-21, and tie the match at one set apiece.
Seton Hall however, struck back in a big way in set three. With the set tied at six, the Pirates went on a 10-1 run to take a 16-7 lead. A kill by Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) ended the set with a final score of 25-14 and the Pirates took a two-sets-to-one match advantage.
Although set four was closer, NJIT never led. The Pirates scored four of the first five points and Seton Hall maintained at least a two-point advantage for the remainder of the match. Leading 15-13, Seton Hall scored six of the next eight points and Sekulova's kill put the Pirates in front 21-15. Seton Hall went on to win set four, 25-20, and take the match in four sets.
The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, November 3 when they travel to Creighton. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
