OMAHA, NEB. - Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied her team-leading 17th double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost at Creighton, 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 18-25) on Sunday. It was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and subsequently, the Pirates first trip to Omaha.
Manthorpe finished with a team-high 21 assists and 10 digs. Senior Alyssa Warren (Joilet, Ill.) again led the Pirates with 16 digs, while sophomore Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) led the Seton Hall offense with nine kills.
Seton Hall (12-13, 3-7) never led in set one as Creighton scored three of the first four points. With the Bluejays leading 5-4, they went on a 6-1 run to take a commanding 11-5 lead. A kill by Grammer cut the Creighton lead to 16-13, but the three point deficit is the closest Seton Hall got as the Bluejays went on to win set one, 25-18.
In set two, Seton Hall took a 5-3 lead, but Creighton responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. The Bluejays maintained at least a three-point lead for the remainder of the frame and won set two, 25-20, to take a commanding two-sets-to-none match lead.
For a second straight set, Seton Hall took an early lead in set three, 6-4. But Creighton responded with three straight points to take a 7-6 lead. With the score tied at nine, the Bluejays scored five straight points to take a 14-9 advantage. With the help of a 7-1 run, that lead was extended to 21-12, and Creighton cruised to a 25-18 set three victory to complete the match sweep.
Creighton, the BIG EAST preseason favorite, improves to 16-6 overall and 7-3 in BIG EAST Conference play.
