The Seton Hall women's basketball team returns to Walsh Gymnasium when it hosts the Weber State University Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. Seton Hall will be facing Weber State for the first time in program history. The Pirates will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the 1993-94 squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished the season No. 14 in the country.
SETON HALL STATUS
Seton Hall improved to 2-0 on the year with an 86-75 victory over Rider University last Sunday. Sophomore forward Tabatha Richardson-Smith led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 13-for-20 shooting in the win over the Broncs. The Pirates' 86 points represented the most for the team since Dec. 31, 2008. Redshirt junior point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons recorded her second-career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, marking her first-ever double-digit rebound performance.
WEBER STATE STATUS
After going 0-29 last season the Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start this year, picking up victories of Walla Walla and Montana Western at home last week. Head coach Bethann Ord is in her second season at the helm, and she came to Weber State after spending four seasons as an assistant at Louisville. The Wildcats have five players averaging double figures after two big wins with Jalen Carpenter leading the squad in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg) while shooting 61.9 percent (13-21) from the field.
SETON HALL VS. THE BIG SKY
Seton Hall has limited experience all-time against the Big Sky Conference, boasting just a 1-0 record against current members of the league. The Pirates' only meeting with a team from the Big Sky came back in 2001 when they faced Sacramento State. SHU defeated Sacramento State, 88-46, on Nov. 25, 2001, at the Lady Rebel Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev.
PIRATES HONOR `93-'94 TEAM
During halftime of Friday night's game Seton Hall will honor the members of its 1993-94 women's basketball team that finished second in the BIG EAST and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The most successful team in school history, the `93-'94 squad finished with a 27-5 overall record and was ranked No. 14 in the country in the final poll of the year. That year Seton Hall lost to Connecticut in the BIG EAST Tournament but hosted the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament at Walsh Gym, beating Vermont and Texas. The Pirates fell to Penn State, 64-60, in the Sweet 16 end their postseason run.
RICHARDSON-SMITH ON FIRE
Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith turned in an incredible scoring day when she torched Rider for 30 points on 13-for-20 shooting on Nov. 10. She is the first Seton Hall player to score 30 points in a game since Jasmine Crew finished with 33 points at Memphis on Dec. 30, 2011. Richardson-Smith scored 17 of her points in the first half when she shot 8-for-9 from the field. She finished just six points shy of the Seton Hall single-game scoring record of 36 and one field goal shy of the single-game record of 14.
SIMMONS ECLIPSES 600-CAREER POINTS
With 18 points against Rider on Nov. 10, redshirt junior guard Ka-Deidre Simmons eclipsed 600 points for her career. Simmons currently leads all active Seton Hall players with 603-career points. She has started 60 of her 63-career games played and is averaging 9.6 ppg.
RARE DOUBLE FOR THE HALL
Redshirt sophomore Bra'Shey Ali (14 rebounds) and redshirt junior Ka-Deidre Simmons (10 rebounds) both recorded double-digit boards against Rider on Nov. 10. The feat marked the first time Seton Hall has seen two player pull down at least 10 rebounds in the same game since Nov. 21, 2009. Ali currently leads the team in rebounding at 14.5 per game while Simmons registered her first-career game with 10 boards.
SIMMONS NEARLY SETS FREE THROW RECORD
Ka-Deidre Simmons scored 18 points against Rider on Nov. 10 and 16 of her points came from the free-throw line. Simmons tied the Seton Hall single-game free throw record of 16, set by Jasmine Crew against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 24, 2011. Only Nicole Emery's 10-for-10 performance from the line against Villanova on Feb. 7, 2009 was a higher single-game free throw shooting percentage than Simmons' (.941) game against the Broncs. Her 17 free throw attempts tie for third on the Seton Hall all-time single-game list.
POSTING BIG NUMBERS
Seton Hall erupted for 86 points in a victory over Rider on Nov. 10, representing the most points the Pirates have scored in a game since beating Norfolk State 95-43 on Dec. 31, 2008. The Pirates had eclipsed 80 points just once over the last four seasons, an 82-35 win over New Orleans last season.
REBOUND RECORD FALLS IN OPENER
Seton Hall pulled in 64 rebounds in its season opening win over Longwood representing the highest single-game rebound total in school history. The Pirates broke the old school record of 63 boards that stood for more than 20 years, set against Niagara on Nov. 24, 1990. It was just the fifth time in program history the Hall had 60 or more rebounds in a single game.
