
Volleyball Falls to Marquette Despite Big Effort

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her eighth triple-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as Marquette defeated a spirited Seton Hall women's volleyball team, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 26-24, 11-15), on Friday.Seton Hall (13-15, 4-9) played some of its best volleyball of the 2013 season against the BIG EAST's top team. Marquette has now won nine straight matches and improves to 12-1 in conference play. The loss is the first of the season for Seton Hall when it out-hits its opponent. The Pirates recorded a .285 attack percentage for the match, compared to .261 for the Golden Eagles.
Manthorpe tallied a team-high 48 assists to go with 14 kills and 11 digs. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 17 kills to go with an impressive .342 attack percentage.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) missed a double-double by just one assist. She finished with a team-best 20 digs to go with nine assists.
The Pirates were ready for the BIG EAST leaders from the start, using a 10-1 run to take a commanding 14-4 lead in set one. Marquette closed the gap to five points late, but didn't draw closer, and Seton Hall won set one, 25-20.
Trailing 5-4 in set two, the Pirates scored six of the next seven points to take a 10-6 lead. The Golden Eagles however, answered with six straight points to reclaim a 12-10 advantage. From there, the teams tied eight times until Marquette took control late. With the set tied at 22, the Golden Eagles scored two straight to enter set point, and held off Seton Hall, 25-23, to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set three proved to be just as close as set two, with the teams tying nine times. With the score locked at 18, Marquette scored five of the next seven points to take a 23-20 lead. Lindsey Gosh's ace closed out the set for the Golden Eagles and gave them a two-sets-to-one match lead with a 25-21 set three victory.
The Pirates however, didn't go down quietly, and stormed back in set four. With the set tied at 11, Seton Hall scored the next four points to take a 15-11 advantage. But Marquette chipped away and eventually took a 22-20 lead. With the match tied at 23, a kill by Gosh gave the Golden Eagles match point, but Schroeder responded with a kill to tie the set at 24. An attack error put Seton Hall in set point, and Shelbey Manthorpe's kill won set four for the Pirates, 26-24, to tie the match at two sets apiece.
Marquette (20-5, 12-1) jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in set five, but the Pirates responded with four of the next five points to tie the set at six. With the set tied at nine, Marquette scored the next two points and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles closed out the set on a 6-2 run, to win 15-11.
The match was the Pirates' 11th five-set match this season. They are 6-5 in those matches.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow afternoon. The Pirates will host Creighton at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
