SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A day after pushing BIG EAST leader Marquette to its limit, the Seton Hall volleyball team upset preseason conference favorite Creighton, 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-17), at Walsh Gym on Saturday. It's only the third time this season that the Pirates have come back to win the match after losing the first set. The victory snaps Creighton's four-match win streak and avenges a 3-0 loss to the Bluejays earlier this season in Omaha.
Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) finished just one kill and two blocks shy of the program's first quadruple-double. Instead, she had to settle for her team-leading 21st double-double of the season with a match-high 36 assists, 11 digs, nine kills and a career-high eight blocks.
Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) also notched a double-double with a team-high 15 kills to go with 13 digs.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led four Pirates that reached double-figures in digs. The reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year tallied a match-high 29 digs. Another key figure in the Pirates' defense on Saturday was junior Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.), who registered a career-high 11 blocks.
Seton Hall (14-15, 5-9) started strong in the first set, and a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates a 12-9 lead. Creighton however, responded by scoring the next four points to jump ahead, 13-12 and never relinquished the lead. Ahead 18-16, the Bluejays closed out the set with a 7-2 run to win, 25-18. Despite the loss, it was a strong defensive set for the Pirates. Warren tallied nine of her team-best 29 digs in the first set alone.
Set two was significantly closer with the teams combining for five lead changes and nine ties. With the score knotted at 10, Seton Hall went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-11 advantage. Creighton rebounded and tied the set at 22. After trading points, Kelli Browning's ace put the Bluejays in set point, but a kill by Schroeder staved off the Pirates' loss and tied the set at 24. Warren served up an ace to put Seton Hall in set point, but a kill by Creighton's Leah McNary tied the set at 25. In the end however, back-to-back errors by Creighton gave Seton Hall a 27-25 set two victory, which tied the match at one set apiece.
Set three proved to be another marathon with both teams scoring more than 25 points. Creighton led for most of the set and took a 20-15 lead on a Pirate ball handling error. Seton Hall responded with a 7-2 run and blocks by Rubin and Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) tied the set at 22. This time, the Pirates staved off two Creighton set points with the Bluejays ahead 24-23 and 26-25. With the set tied at 26, a kill by Stacey Manthorpe put Seton Hall in set point and blocks by Shelbey Manthorpe and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave the Pirates a dramatic 28-26 set three victory.
After trailing early, set four was dominated by Seton Hall. Leading 8-7, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 15-8 advantage. Creighton (19-7, 10-4) was unable to pull closer than four points for the rest of the set and Seton Hall went on to win set four, 25-17, to win the match, three-sets-to-one.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow afternoon. The Pirates will host DePaul at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
