SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her ninth triple-double of the season, and second of the weekend, as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated DePaul, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-14), on Sunday. The victory pulls the Pirates' overall record to .500 at 15-15 with one match remaining in the 2013 season. Seton Hall is now 6-9 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Manthorpe finished with a team-best 42 assists to go with 10 kills and 10 digs for the 21st triple-double of her impressive career. Her nine triple-doubles this season, surpasses her eight that led the nation in 2012.
Junior Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) almost recorded her first career double-double. The middle blocker recorded a career-high nine kills and a team-best eight blocks.
Freshman Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded a career-high 17 digs in the match. Senior Alyssa Warren (Joilet, Ill.), playing in the second-to-last match of her historic collegiate career, again led the Pirates with 24 digs.
Playing their third match in three days, and fresh off a dramatic upset of Creighton just 20 hours earlier, the Pirates appeared a bit sluggish against DePaul in set one. With the set tied at four, the Blue Demons went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. That advantage was extended to 18-10 with the help of a 5-1 run and DePaul never looked back, winning set one, 25-20.
Seton Hall struck back in set two, taking a 14-8 lead on an attack error by DePaul's Vesela Zapryanova. The Blue Demons responded with a 7-2 run to cut the Pirates' lead to 16-15, but DePaul never took the lead and Seton Hall held on for a 25-23 set two victory to even the match.
Set three was easily the closest of the match, featuring 11 ties and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points. A kill by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave Seton Hall a 13-9 lead, but DePaul scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 14. From that point on, neither team led by more than two points. DePaul successfully staved off two Seton Hall set points, but Rubin's kill gave the Pirates a 26-25 lead, and Hansen's kill ended the set, giving The Hall a two-sets-to-one advantage.
Clicking on all cylinders, Seton Hall saved its top performance for set four. The Pirates jumped on DePaul from the start and took a 4-1 advantage. Leading 9-8, Seton Hall took control of the match with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 16-8 edge. Another kill by Rubin extended the Pirates' advantage to 10 points at 23-13, and three points later, Seton Hall won set four in convincing fashion, 25-14.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 for its final match of the 2013 season. The Pirates will face St. John's at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to remain in Walsh Gym following the match as Seton Hall will honor its lone senior, Alyssa Warren.
