BRONX, N.Y. - The 2013 season came to a close for the Seton Hall men's cross country team on Saturday as the Pirates placed 18th at the IC4A University Division Championship held at the Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
The Hall ended the day with 484 points while Fordham raced past the men's field with a team score of 77 points to take the title.
Freshman Victor Ricci (Narragansett, R.I.) ended the season just as he started it, leading the squad with a five-mile time of 27:31.1 to finish in 83rd place overall. In all, Ricci led the team in five of nine races during his debut campaign and finished in the top-two on the squad on six occasions. Ricci also registered the Pirates' fastest time of the year at four of the five different distances at which the team competed.
Sophomore Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) was the next Seton Hall runner to reach the line, placing 93rd overall with a time of 27:40.3. Flannery ranked among Seton Hall's top-two performers in seven of nine appearances, leading the charge three different times. He also established new personal record in the 6K, 8K and 10K while serving as one of three team captains in just his second season at The Hall.
Crossing in 111th place overall was freshman Cameron Quisenberrry (Owensboro, Ky.) as he turned in a 28:02.3 effort that was third-best on the team. Quisenberry and Ricci finish the year as the only team members to score in all nine meets and Quisenberry emerged as one of Seton Hall's most reliable performers, standing as the only Pirate to finish among the team's top-four in every race.
Clocking in 10 spots later was junior Kevin Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) who scored for the first time since his freshman season with a time of 28:15.9. Walsh was forced to miss the majority of last season due to injury but returned in 2013 to add valuable depth to a squad that continued to raise its level of performance.
A third-straight scoring effort for freshman Alex Mallue (Canton, Ohio) punctuated a season that started with one at the Monmouth XC Kickoff as he turned in a time of 28:57.0 to finish 144th. Mallue delivered his best efforts during the biggest meets of the year, scoring at the BIG EAST and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet to conclude the year with five finishes in the SHU scoring group.
With Walsh adding his name on Saturday in the finale, Seton Hall ends the year with eight different team members who scored at least once. 37 of 45 total scoring efforts were turned in by underclassmen and 13 of the Pirates' 14 team members are eligible to return next season.
