REUNION, FLA. – Junior
Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) shot a 4-over-par, 74, in Tuesday’s third and final round of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort in Florida to lead the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a sixth place finish. Cantú was the lone Pirate to consistently play strong golf throughout the tournament. She tied for eighth among 40 individual golfers with a 6-over-par, 75-71-76-222. Cantú finished 12 strokes behind a pair of Notre Dame freshmen, Lindsey Weaver and Talia Campbell, who share the individual championship. Collectively, the Pirates had a difficult final round, shooting a 23-over-par, 311, to drop from a fourth place standing after round two to a sixth place finish. Seton Hall finished just one stroke behind USF for fifth place. Notre Dame won the team championship and was the lone team to shoot under par (-3). Louisville placed second at 11-over-par. The Pirates finished just 10 strokes away from third place St. John’s (+40). “Certainly, it’s a disappointing way to finish what was otherwise a terrific year for us,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “But it doesn’t take away what we were able to accomplish in 2012-13. I’m disappointed in the scores, not in the team. I know how hard they’ve worked and prepared all season leading up to this event. They might have put a little too much pressure on themselves.”
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) found her stroke after a difficult first round. The freshman led the Pirates with a 3-over-par, 75, in the final round to finish in a tie for 23
rd place at 17-over-par with an 83-75-75-233. The remaining Pirate competitors,
Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.),
Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and
Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) all tied for 31
st place overall.
Basalone wasn’t able to rebound from a harsh second round and finished at 20-over-par with a 71-85-80-236. Kruse was 20-over-par with a 79-76-81-236, while McClure was 20-over-par with a 76-80-80-236.
The BIG EAST Championship concludes the spring season and the 2012-13 competition year for Seton Hall. The Pirates will be back in action this fall with the same group of players as there are no seniors on the current roster.
“We’re going to use this year a springboard for what could be something really special in 2013-14,” Doell said. If this tournament leaves a bad taste in their mouths, it might fuel them to work all the harder throughout the summer. We can learn from this experience and become better golfers as a result.”
