SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall University senior shortstop Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Softball Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
It is the third time in her career Hammer has received BIG EAST weekly accolades but the first time since her sophomore season. It is the sixth time this season Seton Hall has landed a student-athlete on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and Hammer is the fifth different player to earn the distinction.
Hammer turned in a monster final week of the regular season to pick up conference recognition by finishing the Pirates’ six games last week hitting .500 with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple and a perfect fielding percentage.
Those gaudy offensive numbers were bolstered even further in the BIG EAST series at Georgetown on Saturday-Sunday where in the three games against the Hoyas Hammer hit .667 with five runs scored and three extra-base hits, a pair of doubles and a triple.
By helping lead the Pirates to a pair of wins at Georgetown Hammer helped Seton Hall secure a spot in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship, the program’s first postseason berth since the 2009 season and 10th overall trip to the conference tournament. The Pirates also secured eight wins in the BIG EAST, their most conference victories since the 2010 season.
Hammer’s impressive week began in a record setting victory at Saint Peter’s. The Pirates picked up a 16-0 win, the largest single-game margin of victory in program history, and Hammer finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and a double.
After dropping the series opener at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon the Pirates faced a must-win situation in the second game of a doubleheader and Hammer shined in what turned into a lopsided Seton Hall win. She went 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring four runs with an RBI and her first triple of the season, helping guide the Pirates to a crucial 14-1 win.
Sunday’s regular season finale boiled down to another must-win scenario for Seton Hall and Hammer was there to make a big impact in a game that featured just three total runs scored. In the top of the first inning Hammer drilled her third double of the week and came around to score on a Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) RBI base hit to center to give Seton Hall an important early lead.
That early inning score proved to match Georgetown’s offensive output, setting the stage for sophomore Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) to secure Seton Hall’s 2-1 victory with a solo home run to deep left field in the top of the seventh inning.
Seton Hall is the No. 8 seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship and the Pirates will face No. 1 seed Notre Dame in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, May 9, at the USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, Fla., at 12:30 p.m.
