SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s basketball program has added incoming freshman Rashed Anthony (Cordova, S.C./Flora Macdonald Academy) and junior college transfer Hakeem Harris (Bergenfield, N.J./Blair Academy/Connors State) to the 2013-14 roster. Anthony, a 6-8 forward, was a three year starter and All-Conference performer at Flora Macdonald Academy (N.C.). Harris is a 6-1 All-Region guard who averaged 12.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season at Connors State College (Okla.).
“We are very happy to have Rashed and Hakeem join our family here at Seton Hall. They will both have the opportunity to contribute to our program and give us more depth at their positions,” said Pirates’ head coach Kevin Willard.
Anthony was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection for head coach Derrick Bond at Flora Macdonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C. He averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as a senior to be named the Cougars’ Most Valuable Player for the second straight year.
As a junior, Anthony posted 16 points and nine rebounds per game helping Flora Macdonald to a 31-8 overall record and the 2012 NCISAA 1A Championship. Anthony put up 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks per contest as a sophomore. In his three seasons, Flora Macdonald produced a 77-30 overall record. Anthony played AAU ball for the South Carolina Elite.
“Rashed gives us the size we were looking for,” said Willard. “He is a skilled shot blocker with great length and leaping ability. Rashed will improve as he adds strength and commits to the weight room.”
Harris started 27 of 30 appearances for head coach Bill Muse as the Cowboys posted a 24-9 overall record and earned a NJCAA National Tournament berth. He led the team in three-pointers (54), assists (102) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0). Harris also finished second on the squad in scoring (12.4) and free-throw shooting (77.9%).
He scored in double-figures 18 times in 2012-13, including six 20-point outbursts. Harris averaged 14.1 points against conference opponents helping Connors State advance to the Region II championship game.
“Hakeem is a hard-nosed guard who has experienced success both on the court and in the classroom at his previous institutions. We look forward to the veteran leadership he will add to our roster next season,” Willard said.
Harris was a four year starter at Blair Academy (N.J.) for head coach Joe Mantegna. He garnered First Team All-State Prep honors as a senior averaging 17 points, eight assists and eight rebounds per game. He hit the game-winning shot in the 2008 New Jersey Prep A championship game to lead Blair to its first ever state title. Harris played his first collegiate year at Broward Junior College (Fla.) where he averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 assists per game.
Anthony and Harris will help bolster the Pirates’ roster next season along with newcomers Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Gill St. Bernard’s), a 6-2 three-time all-state guard, and Stephane Manga (Orleans, France/Princeton Day Academy/Monroe College), a 6-6 junior college transfer. Sina is an ESPN Top 100 recruit and Manga was ranked No. 19 for 2013 junior college players.
