FAIRFAX, VA. - The Seton Hall University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling at George Mason University, 1-0, on Friday night in Fairfax, Va.
Seton Hall and Mason both entered Friday night's showdown without a result in the loss column, but the Patriots (4-0-1) were able to defend their home field and come away with a win thanks to a goal in the 61st minute.
The game's lone score came off a George Mason corner kick. Patriot forward Timi Mulgrew fielded the kick and served a ball to Hugh Roberts in the Seton Hall box. Roberts headed it over to Julio Arjona, who finished the play to register his first goal of the season.
Although George Mason's game winner did not come until the second half, the Patriots outshot Seton Hall 7-1 in the opening period, where freshman goalkeeper Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) came away with a pair of saves.
Following Arjona's score Seton Hall (2-1-2) ratcheted up the pressure, as George Mason did not attempt a shot over the final 28 minutes while the Pirates took six of their eight corner kicks over that same span.
Late in the game senior Christian Battistesa (South Bound Brook, N.J.) recorded SHU's first shot on net, but Patriot keeper Steffen Kraus was there to make the stop.
It was the first time this season Seton Hall failed to score and the Pirates entered the contest averaging three goals per game. The shutout was the third of the season for George Mason, which has yielded just a pair of goals through its first five games of the season.
Seton Hall continues its weekend road trip on Sunday, Sept. 15, when it heads down to Princeton, N.J., to face the Tigers at 2 p.m. Princeton enters the game at 0-2 after falling to Rutgers, 3-2, on Friday night.
