NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Junior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) fired a final round 74 to help lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a fourth place team finish among 17 competitors at the 2013 Yale Women's Intercollegiate.
McClure finished with an 8-over-par, 76-71-74-221, to tie for seventh place among 91 individual competitors. It's her second top-10 finish in three tournaments already this fall. McClure entered the season with just two top-10 finishes in each of the prior two years.
As a team, the Pirates methodically moved up the leader board as the tournament progressed. Seton Hall was in ninth place following round one, but moved up to fifth place after its record-low, 290, in round two. In round three, the Pirates shot an 18-over-par, 302, the second-best third round score, to move up to fourth place.
"We closed really well today with a number of birdies late in our rounds," said head coach Sara Doell. "I'm very pleased with a 302, and think we rebounded nicely this weekend. It's always positive when we can consistently record top-five finishes at tournaments with large fields. I'm very proud of how we played this weekend."
Host Yale won the team title at 22-over-par. Seton Hall's lone BIG EAST competition, Xavier, finished second at 41-over-par.
After two tournaments to start the fall that were uncharacteristic of her ability, Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) rebounded strongly at Yale. The senior tied for 13th place overall with a 12-over-par, 79-71-75-225.
Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) tied for 16th overall following her 13-over-par, 78-70-78-226.
Seton Hall's top competitor at Princeton last weekend, Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.), tied for 29th overall at Yale with a 19-over-par, 78-79-75-232.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) rounded out the Pirates' team scoring with a 22-over-par, 79-78-78-235.
All five Seton Hall golfers that contributed to the team score this weekend avoided a score in the 80s in all three rounds.
Junior McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), competing as an individual this weekend, finished her tournament at 28-over-par with a 78-81-82-241.
Seton Hall will now take three weekends off before returning to the links on Oct. 14 for the first of two rounds in nearby Piscataway, N.J. as part of the Rutgers Invitational. The Pirates are the defending champions.
