LEWISBURG, PA. - Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) each shot a 3-over-par, 73, in round three to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to second place tie at the 2013 Bucknell Invitational.
Collectively, the Pirates saved their best team round for last. Seton Hall fired a 18-over-par, 298, in round three to tie Columbia for second place and finish 10 strokes behind William & Mary, the team champion. The Pirates finished with an 82-over-par, 313-311-298-922.
"Today's performance is much closer to what you can expect from our team," said head coach Sara Doell. "I'm very pleased with a 298 and like how we were able to battle to second place amongst a talented field of 17 teams."
Kruse used her stellar third round to jump ahead of teammate Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.), who was tied for the individual lead following two rounds. The junior finished in third place among 90 individual golfers, just one stroke behind Columbia's Michelle Piyapattra for the title. Kruse finished at 13-over-par with a 77-73-73-223.
McClure finished just one stroke behind Kruse for fourth place overall. She finished the three-round event at 14-over-par with a 74-74-76-224. McClure's fourth place finish is the highest of her career and her first top-five.
"Ali and Erin were terrific all weekend," Doell said. "I'm especially happy to see Erin step forward and put together this type of effort. When we can rely on Erin to play at this level, we can compete for any team title."
Zabrosky used a strong third round to finish third amongst the Pirate starters. The sophomore tied for 19th place overall with a 26-over-par, 79-84-73-236. Her 3-over-par, 73, in round three is the low round for her young collegiate career.
"Today's round is proof of what Karlie is capable of," Doell said. "Karlie had a great summer and I hope her performance then, coupled with this tournament, will lead her to greater things down the road."
Junior McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and sophomore Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) both saved their best performances for round three. Cutter shaved six strokes off her round two score with a 6-over-par, 76, in round three to finish the tournament at 33-over-par with an 85-82-76-243. Tenhundfeld finished only two strokes behind Cutter at 35-over-par with an 83--82-80-245.
Seniors Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) competed as individuals for the Pirates this weekend. After a very disappointing Friday, Basalone registered a respectable 78 in round three to finish at 56-over-par for the tournament. Massei finished two strokes behind at 58-over-par.
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend with three rounds at the Princeton Invitational at Spring Lake Country Club.
