NEWARK, N.J. - Despite a slow start, the Seton Hall men's basketball team never trailed on Tuesday night, seizing control early and pulling away from reigning Northeast Conference champions Mount Saint Mary's in a dominant 78-55 victory that preserved The Hall's spot among the nation's unbeaten teams.
The Pirates (6-0) hit just three of their first nine shot attempts on the night but found the mark on 30 of their final 42 shots on the night to build an insurmountable edge. Freshman Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was at the forefront of the offensive surge; coming off the bench to set a lead all scorers with 16 points - a new career high - on 8-for-8 shooting.
The Bishop Loughlin product also tallied a game-high three steals and tied for the team lead with three assists in 23 minutes.
Classmate Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) posted 13 points and nine boards to finish one rebound shy of his third double-double of the season. Delgado has now led the Pirates efforts on the glass in each of the first six games of his career.
Fellow newcomer Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points while newly named BIG EAST Player of the Week Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished with 11; extending his run as the only Pirate to score in double-figures in every game thus far in 2014-15.
With the score knotted at eight just over six minutes into the contest, a put-back by Delgado off an errant Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) trey gave SHU a lead it would not relinquish. The Pirates would not begin the decisive charge until after the 11-minute mark when following a Kristijan Krajina layup for The Mount that pulled the visitors to within four at 21-17, The Hall rattled off an impressive 21-to-2 run that built a cushion that proved too much for the Mountaineers to overcome.
Seton Hall limited Mount Saint Mary's to just one field goal in the eight-minute span; a stretch that featured 12 points in the paint and was punctuated by two highlight slams from Carrington that originated from his own steals.
The Pirates took a 45-29 advantage into the break, leading at halftime for the sixth time this season, and widened the gap to as many as 32 in the final period when Carrington knocked down a jumper to make it 72-40 with just over seven minutes to play.
The Mountaineers found a rhythm in the latter portion of the contest but the two teams were separated by less than 20 points for a total of 59 seconds in the final 18 minutes of the game.
Generating easy baskets proved to be the difference for The Hall as SHU shot a season-best 64.7 percent from the floor (33-for-51) and out-scored The Mount 26-to-12 on the fastbreak. Thanks in part to the wealth of transition opportunities, head coach Kevin Willard's squad racked up almost as many points in the paint (52) as Mount Saint Mary's (1-4) did total points.
Carrington, Delgado and Whitehead led yet another standout performance from this freshmen class, combining with Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) to account for 47 points on 21-of-26 shooting (.807).
Sina collected nine points, five rebounds and three assists without a turnover while Will Miller paced three Mountaineers in double-figures with 13.
The Pirates will look to continue their early season run on Saturday, December 6 when in-state rival Rutgers visits the Prudential Center for the first-ever Garden State Hardwood Classic. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the contest will be televised nationally through the FOX Sports Networks. A radio broadcast featuring the team of Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin can be heard on AM970 (WNYM) or online via the Pirate Sports Network.
