NEW YORK - Seton Hall tennis standout Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) has added another award to her collection as the BIG EAST Conference has announced that the class of 2014 member has been chosen as the female recipient of the 2013-14 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award.
Selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee, the awards are given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport who have been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following year and who have demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution or the community.
Xavier men's tennis player James Roebker was chosen as the male recipient.
Sher is the first Seton Hall student-athlete to receive the award which was instituted prior to the 2010-11 academic year. After graduating with Magna Cum Laude last month with a degree in environmental studies, she plans to attend the University of British Columbia where she will work towards a Master of Arts in resource management and environment studies and will receive a $5,000 scholarship as part of the award.
The Hong Kong native capped a decorated career by adding 14 more singles victories at #1 this spring to push her career total to 79 - the second-most in program history. She was rewarded with All-BIG EAST honors for the third consecutive season and was one of five unanimous selections to the 2014 squad. Sher was also one-half of one of the most productive doubles tandems in the league, teaming with classmate Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) to record 12 wins and affirm their spot among the top-10 duos in the Northeast region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
A consummate professional both on and off the court, Sher received the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship from the ITA a year ago and has also helped the tennis program several ITA academic honors throughout her career. A member of the national student-athlete honor society Chi Alpha Sigma, she also helped lead the tennis program to two-straight Seton Hall team academic awards as well.
She also helped spearhead an initiative to help raise funds to support research in the fight against ovarian cancer and was an active participant in a variety of service projects coordinated by the Seton Hall Athletics Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders (H.A.L.L.) Program and the university's Division of Volunteer Efforts (D.O.V.E.) including a "Coats for Kids" drive where members of the Seton Hall tennis program joined forces with the Denver Broncos in advance of their Super Bowl appearance in February.
