JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Pirates men's and women's basketball teams along with athletic department administrators represented Seton Hall on Saturday at the sixth annual Walk for Team Walker Foundation benefiting local youth. The group joined hundreds of participants at Exchange Place along the Hudson River to raise proceeds and awareness for the non-profit organization's after school program in the Jersey City area.
"The overwhelming support annually at the Walk for Team Walker is impressive," said Bryan Felt Associate Athletic Director for Development & External Affairs. "It is always a wonderful experience to contribute to the camaraderie at this event with our coaches and student-athletes as we extend our reach in the community. Community enrichment is a key component to our H.A.L.L. Program (Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders) and is an important aspect of the University's mission, so endorsing such a worthwhile cause is certainly something we take great pride in."
The walk is a key fundraiser for the Team Walker Foundation, which officially opened the Team Walker Learning Center in May. Located at 373 Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City, the three-story state-of-the-art building serves as a centralized location to create a safe atmosphere to receive tutoring services and participate in community based activities.
Team Walker was founded in 1996 by Jersey City native Jerry Walker. The organization's mission is to uplift and create positive alternatives for youth of Jersey City through programs designed to enlighten participants and teach the importance of solid academics, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Walker, a Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer, was a member of the Pirates' two BIG EAST Championship Teams scoring over 1,000-points from 1990-93.
