MXC Earns BIG EAST Team Excellence Award

NEW YORK - The BIG EAST Conference announced on Monday that the Seton Hall men's cross country team has been recognized with 2013-14 Team Academic Excellence Award for having the highest collective grade-point average among league members in the sport.
The 22 total award winners were chosen based on the 2013-14 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
The announcement marks on the second consecutive year that the Pirates' men's cross country squad has earned the honor and comes on the heels of a spring in which the team also captured its second-straight Seton Hall Team Academic Award on the men's side. Class of 2014 member Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) was named the Seton Hall Senior Male Scholar Athlete of the Year while junior John Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) was honored as the top Scholar Athlete in his class as well.
The men's cross country team also accounted for 12 of Seton Hall's 191 student-athletes who received BIG EAST Academic All-Star distinction last week.
"This is a tremendous honor for our program," said longtime head coach John Moon. "To win this award in two-straight years is a reflection of the hard work our guys have put in. I am very proud of the way our team has balanced performing on the course and in the classroom."
Nine BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored as Butler and DePaul led the league each with five teams recognized. Georgetown, Marquette, Creighton, Villanova and Xavier had two teams receive awards, while Seton Hall and affiliate member Cincinnati were represented by one team each.
