PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Seton Hall University men's soccer team lost, 2-0, in a non-conference tilt at Drexel University on Tuesday night at Vidas Field.
An early miscue on defense led to Drexel's first goal of the night in the 17th minute. The Pirates committed a turnover in their half of the field, leading to a John Grosh shot from the middle of the area. His attempt was blocked by a defender but the rebound found Michele Pataia on the right side, and he sent a low shot toward the far side for his second goal of the season.
A little over 13 minutes later the Dragons added to their lead. Sophomore defender Shawn Morrison (York, Pa.) was called for a foul on a slide tackle, resulting in a free kick from 22-yards away on the right half of the field. Grosh curved a cross toward the far side which Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) came out from net to attempt to punch away. He failed to make clean contact, and Matthew DiDomenico was there to deflect back on an empty net.
Fewer than three minutes into the second half Spindler made a phenomenal save to keep the deficit at two. Senior Kai Greene (South Orange, N.J.) was whistled for a foul 20-yards out and once again it was Grosh who took the free kick. He bent a shot around the defensive wall on frame, only to be denied by Spindler as he stretched out to his right.
The Pirates struggled throughout the game to generate quality offensive chances, attempting eight shots, four on goal. It was a header off target in the 66th minute that provided The Hall with its best chance to get back into the game.
Freshman Lukas Pangonis (Kaunas, Lithuania) would have had the assist, as he served a long pass from 30-yards away to Greene in the middle of the area. Greene made solid contact with his header toward the top shelf, but it soared over the bar.
It was just the second time this season Seton Hall was shutout, with the Pirates previously tying No. 18 George Mason, 0-0. It was the first win in the series for Drexel in just the fourth-ever matchup between the two programs; they tied 3-3 last year in South Orange. SHU is now 0-3-1 on the road this year.
Seton Hall resumes conference play this Saturday, Oct. 4, when it heads to Omaha, Neb., to face No. 11 Creighton University at 8 p.m. (ET).
