SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) and freshman Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) combined for 24 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Marquette, 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 15-25), on Saturday.
Both Hansen and Thelen, Seton Hall's starting middle blockers, registered 12 kills. Thelen's performance was particularly impressive given her team-best .455 attack percentage.
Marquette (11-6, 3-2), coming off a sweep by Villanova on Friday, played inspired volleyball from the start. The Pirates had little response for a Marquette offense that resulted in a .467 attack percentage in set one. The Golden Eagles had 15 kills and just one attack error in a 25-18 victory, which set the pace for the rest of the match.
Turning Point:
After trailing for most of set two, an ace by Hansen finally pulled the Pirates even at 22. Two points later, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) knotted the set at 23. Marquette however, scored the last two points of the set to edge The Hall, 25-23, to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Pirates never led in set three, and an 8-2 Marquette run gave the Golden Eagles a 23-13 advantage before eventually completing the sweep with a 25-15 win.
