Pirate Points:
- Four Pirates scored in double-figures as The Hall opened the 2015-16 season with an 84-67 win over Dartmouth at the Prudential Center on Friday. Isaiah Whitehead started his sophomore campaign in style, leading the team with 18 points and a career-high eight assists in his debut as the squad's primary point guard
- Transfer Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) made an immediate impact in his return to the Garden State, totaling 14 points and five assists in 30 minutes off the bench. The Plainfield native came to South Orange after two seasons at UMass and became the first Pirate to record 10+ points and 5+ assists in a reserve role since the 2013-14 season (40 games)
- The Hall shot 61.7 percent from the field to finish with its highest point total in a season opener since the 2008-09 season (vs. St. Francis (NY), 88-61). Seton Hall has won 13 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2013-14 campaign and has won 15 of 16 such games during that stretch. Overall, SHU is 28-2 (.933) under Kevin Willard when scoring at least 80
- Sophomores Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (13 pts) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) (12 pts) also finished in double-figures as part of an all-sophomore starting lineup. It was the fourth time that three members of the heralded class have scored in double-figures in the same game and the first since Whitehead's return from a nine-game absence due to injury last year, a 90-82 victory over Xavier on January 31.As a comparison, the five starters from Friday combined to score 12 points in the 2013-14 season opener with eight coming from Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic)
- Delgado and Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) also shone in starting roles against Dartmouth, combining to shoot 7-for-7 from the field and haul in 17 rebounds. In all, the sophomores combined for 59 points and 27 rebounds while another player who joined the program prior to the 2014-15 season, Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria), finished with nine points and five rebounds (14 minutes) in his collegiate debut after sitting out last year
- Nzei and Gordon were two of five Pirates who made their Seton Hall debut against the Big Green. Braeden Anderson (Okotoks, Alberta), a transfer from Fresno State, who is believed to be the only Div. I men's basketball player currently attending law school, added two points and two rebounds in 10 minutes while freshman Veer Singh (New York, N.Y.) pulled down three boards in a reserve role as well. Junior walk-on Michael Dowdy Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) saw spot duty in his first official collegiate contest
- Sunday's contest will be played inside Historic Walsh Gymnasium, an on-campus arena that served as the Pirates' primary home until 1981-82 when The Hall began hosting games at the Meadowlands. Head coach Kevin Willard has helped bring meaningful games back to Walsh with one regular season contest scheduled there in every year since 2012-13 (3-0). SHU also hosted a pair of NIT games against Stony Brook and UMass in Walsh as a no. 1 seed in the 2012 NIT
Scouting Wagner
- Wagner trailed by just a single point at halftime in the season opener at St. John's but shot just 9-for-31 (.290) in the second half before falling, 66-57
- Sophomore guard Corey Henson scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half and sank four of his eight attempts from downtown on the night
- The Seahawks out-rebounded St. John's, 42-to-38, and won the battle on the offensive boards, 15-to-6. Guard Dwaun Anderson, a Michigan State transfer, pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go with 11 points in his return to action after playing just one game last season
- Wagner attempted 13 more shots than the Red Storm (60/47) but made two less (19/21), shooting just 31.7 percent from the field
- Head coach Bashir Mason is in his fourth season at the helm and has led the Seahawks to an average of 16 victories in his first three in charge, qualifying for the NEC Tournament each time. Last season, the Seahawks went 10-20 overall but posted an 8-10m mark in the Northeast Conference (NEC)
- At 31 years of age, Mason is the second-youngest active head coach in Division I. Both Mason and Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard are among the 46 active head coaches who are 40 and under
- Former Pirate standout Donald Copeland '06 joined the Wagner coaching staff prior to the 2015-16 season. Copeland scored 754 points in four seasons at The Hall and helped lead SHU to the 2006 NCAA Tournament as a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection and teammate of current Seton Hall assistant coach Grant Billmeier as a senior.
