NEW YORK - Standout Seton Hall freshman Lior Grubert (Yehud-Monosson, Israel) has been named BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Male Athlete of the Week for the third time this season the conference announced on Tuesday.
Following a performance in which he recorded three individual victories at home against MAAC champions Rider on Friday, Grubert becomes the first Pirate on record to earn the weekly award three times in a single season.
The newcomer was previously tabbed as the performer of the week on November 10 on the heels of a Seton Hall sweep of Georgetown and Villanova and on November 24, he became the first Pirate swimmer since Kevin Webster in 2009 to win the award twice in the same year after posting two victories and a meet record at the Patriot Invitational.
The announcement also marks the second consecutive week that a Pirate has been chosen on the men's side after sophomore Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) took home the award last Tuesday as the Seton Hall men have now totaled four weekly awards in 2015-16.
Against the Broncs on Friday, Grubert starred in the first-ever Pirate Sports Network broadcast of a swimming & diving event - cruising to top honors in both the 500 and 1,000-free. At 500 yards, Grubert clocked in at 4:40.98, nearly six seconds in front of the runner-up while in the 1,000 yard event, he was even more dominant as his time of 9:41.90 was 13.36 seconds faster than Rider's Sam Cramer in second-place.
To wrap up the evening, Grubert registered a wire-to-wire victory in the 200-IM, logging a 1:55.42 mark to push his individual total to 16 victories for the season.
Both SHU swimming & diving squads will be busy this weekend, first traveling to Marist on Saturday, January 23 (1 PM) before returning home the following day to host UConn in a meet that will serve as Senior Day for the members of the Class of 2016. Start-time between the Pirates and Huskies is slated for 11:00 a.m. and a live stream of the meet is once again scheduled to be available, for free, on the Pirate Sports Network.
