Thelen Powers Pirates to Sweep of Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tallied a career-high 21 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Butler, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 27-25), on Saturday.

Butler scored six of the first eight points to begin the match, but the Pirates rebounded nicely with five straight points to take a 7-6 lead. From there, the teams combined for nine ties and five lead changes. With the score tied at 22, Seton Hall scored two straight and a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) put the Pirates in set point at 24-22. Two points later, a kill by Thelen won the set for The Hall, 25-23.

The Bulldogs started the second set the same as the first with a 6-2 lead, and the Pirates rallied similarly as well. Trailing 13-11, The Hall went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 18-13 advantage. Another kill by Thelen put the Pirates in set point, 24-20, but Butler responded with four straight points to tie the set at 24. Seton Hall however, didn't relent, and back-to-back kills by Madison Sakowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) gave the Pirates a 26-24, set two victory and a commanding two-set match lead.

Butler bounced back and took an early lead in set three, 13-7. Seton Hall rallied and a kill by Schroeder tied the set at 20.  After five more ties, a kill by Thelen put the Pirates in match points at 26-25, and the ensuing kill by Salkowski won the match for The Hall.

Inside the Numbers:
- Thelen had eight digs to go with her match-high 20 kills.
- Sophomore Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) finished with a team-high 39 assists to go with 13 digs.
- Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had a match-high 22 digs to go with four assists.
- Salkowski had six kills without an attack error.
- Schroeder finished with nine kills.
- With 22 digs today, Fournier becomes only the second Pirate (Alyssa Warren) in program history to amass more than 2,000 for a career.
- With nine kills today, Schroeder passes former Pirate Laura Romeika for 10th on Seton Hall's career list.
- Coffey's double-double is her team-leading fifth of the season and the 15th of her career.
- Thelen has recorded at least 15 kills in a single match a team-best seven times this season.
- Thelen recorded a total of 41 kills over two matches this weekend.
- The Pirates improve to 5-3 all-time against Butler.
- Seton Hall improves to 5-7 on the road in 2016.
- Seton Hall improves to 5-6 in three-set matches this season.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, October 28 when they host defending BIG EAST champion Creighton at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
