Pirates' Team Effort Subdues Providence, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) notched a match-high 16 kills and the Seton Hall defense held Providence to a -.009 attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-12) sweep on Saturday.
Seton Hall (12-14, 6-7) scored the first six points of the first set to establish the tone for the match. Leading 6-3, the Pirates went on an 8-0 run, and an ace by Miranda Higginbotham (Dallas, Texas) gave them a commanding 14-3 advantage. Thelen recorded eight kills in the first set alone as the Pirates rolled to a 25-14 victory.
Set two was undoubtedly the closest of the match. Ahead 9-7, The Hall scored four unanswered points to take a 13-7 lead. Providence however, methodically chipped away at the deficit and used an 8-2 run to draw even with the Pirates at 21. With the score tied at 23, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) put the Pirates in set point, and the ensuing kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the set for The Hall.
Providence scored three straight to take an early 5-4 lead in set three, but it was the final lead of the match for the Friars. The Pirates responded with a 13-1 run, which included three services aces by Schroeder, to take a 17-6 advantage. The Hall won set three in convincing fashion, 25-12.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sophomore Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) finished with a match-high 36 assists and matched her season-high with 15 digs.
- Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had a match-high 21 digs.
- Junior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) finished with nine kills and only two attack errors.
- Gasser had seven kills and no attack errors for a team-best .538 attack percentage.
- Schroeder finished with six kills.
- Coffey's double-double is the team-leading sixth of the season and the 16th of her career.
- Thelen has tallied at least 15 kills in a single-match a team-best eight times this season.
- Fournier has now reached at least 20 digs in a single-match 11 times this season and 40 times in her career.
- The Pirates improve to 13-15 all-time against Providence and completed the season sweep.
- Seton Hall improves to 5-4 at Walsh Gym in 2016.
- Seton Hall improves to 6-7 in three-set matches this season.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, November 4 when they host Georgetown at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
