Mason, Fuels Pirates Past Georgetown, 3-1
11/4/2016 9:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 22 kills to lead the Seton Hall women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 25-8, 25-15) victory over Georgetown on Friday.
Â
Georgetown started fast and led for much of the early portion of set one. Trailing 13-10, Seton Hall scored six of the next eight points, and block assists by Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) gave the Pirates their first lead, 16-15. With the score tied at 18, The Hall tallied seven of the set's final 10 points, and a kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sealed the victory, 25-21.
Â
The Hoyas again started quick in set two, but this time, the Pirates never recovered. Georgetown led, wire-to-wire, and used a 6-1 run to open a 19-10 advantage. The Hoyas connected on a .464 attack percentage in set two, compared to just .088 for The Hall, and tied the match at one set apiece with a convincing 25-14 win.
Â
Turning Point:
As dominant as Georgetown appeared in the second set, the Pirates were even more impressive in set three. Mason notched eight of her 22 kills in set three alone as The Hall committed just one attack error in route to a .688 attack percentage. Leading 9-6, Seton Hall went on a 13-1 run to grab a commanding 21-7 advantage. They cruised to a 25-8 set three victory.
Â
Seton Hall (13-14, 7-7) kept up its momentum in set four, racing out to an early 9-3 advantage. From there, the lead methodically grew. A kill by Thelen extended the margin to 19-10, and The Hall went on to win set four, 25-15.
