11/5/2016 10:27:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a season-high 19 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team outlasted Villanova in five sets, 3-2 (27-25, 25-14, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11), on Saturday.
Â
Seton Hall (14-14, 8-7) started the match strong and an ace by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) gave it a 14-8 lead in set one. Villanova rallied to tie the score at 19, and an ace by Allison Fitzgerald put the Wildcats in set point, 24-23. Seton Hall bounced back however, and a kill by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) tied the score at 24. With the Pirates leading 25-24, an ace by Miranda Higginbotham (Dallas, Texas) won the set for The Hall.
Â
The Pirates led for virtually the entire second set before winning in convincing fashion, 25-14, to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.Â
With The Hall eyeing a sweep, Villanova bounced back in set three. The Pirates never led, but remained close throughout the set. Block assists by Schroeder and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) cut the Wildcat lead to 19-17, but Villanova responded with six straight points to win set three, 25-17. Set four was similarly close, and had the same result. With the score tied at 15, Villanova scored seven straight to take a commanding 22-15 advantage. They went on to tie the match with a 25-21 set four win.
Â
Turning Point:
The Hall had a .500 attack percentage and committed just one attack error in a near flawless set-five performance. Another kill by Mason gave the Pirates an 8-6 lead when the teams switched sides. Leading 12-10, Seton Hall scored three of the final four points, which included kills by Gasser and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.).
