Fournier, Schroeder Lead Pirates to Senior Day Sweep
11/19/2016 5:52:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seniors Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) played their final home match on Saturday, and guided the Seton Hall women's volleyball team to a sweep of St. John's, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-23).
Â
The victory enables the Pirates to clinch a berth in the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament if Villanova loses at Creighton on Sunday. That match begins at 2:00 pm ET.
Â
Seton Hall (16-15, 10-8) forced a pair of early St. John's timeouts while darting out to an early 12-4 advantage in set one. The Red Storm cut the lead to four, 16-12, but the Pirates responded with seven unanswered points to take a commanding 23-12 edge. St. John's narrowed the final margin, but The Hall claimed victory in set one, 25-17.
Â
St. John's started quickly in set two, scoring six of the first eight points, but the Pirates methodically chipped away at the deficit. Trailing 18-15, The Hall scored three straight to finally draw even at 18. Coming out of their timeout, St. John's scored two quick points to reclaim the lead, 20-18, but the Pirates bounced back with three straight, and a block by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) and Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) gave them their first lead of the set, 21-20. Trailing 22-21, The Hall ended set two with three straight points. A Schroeder block put Seton Hall in set point, and her kill ended it, 25-22.
Â
The Pirates had their best offensive performance in set three. They had 15 kills and just four attack errors for a match-high .344 attack percentage. Trailing 15-12, The Hall scored four straight, and a kill by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) gave them a 16-15 advantage. The Pirates never trailed again. A kill by Salkowski put Seton Hall in match point, 24-20, and although three straight points by the Red Storm made the set close, a St. John's attack error ended the set, 25-23, in the Pirates' favor.
