Offense Propels Pirates Past Columbia, 95-71

NEWARK, N.J. – Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) drained seven 3-point field goals and was one of four Pirates with 17 or more points as the Seton Hall men's basketball team picked up a 95-71 victory over visiting Columbia at Prudential Center on Thursday night.
Powell finished with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, and juniors Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) (19), Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (17) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) (17) all scored in double figures.
Delgado added 11 rebounds to notch his third double-double of the season, and Rodriguez added six rebounds, four assists and a career-high six steals.
For the Lions, freshman guard Mike Smith poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) shooting.
Turning Point
The Pirates took a 17-8 lead following a Powell trey with 13:29 on the clock in the first half before Columbia responded with a 12-4 to cut the SHU advantage to within two points at 22-20.
Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) nailed a jumper with 27 seconds remaining in the opening frame to give the Hall a 10-point, 47-37 advantage at the break.
The Lions were within eight at the 17:16 mark before Powell banged home a three at 16:02. With 15:00 on the clock, Columbia trailed by five when Powell connected on another triple to put SHU back ahead by 10.
Two Columbia free-throws got it within eight, 60-52, at 13:55, but sharp-shooting Powell remained hot and buried another three with 13:42 to go, giving SHU another double-digit lead. The Hall then went on a 28-12 run to take its largest lead of the night at 91-64 with 4:20 remaining.
Inside the Numbers
- The Pirates were lights out from the field in the second half, shooting 19-of-30 (63.3 percent), and limited Columbia to 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) from the field and 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) from 3-point range.
- Carrington was 5-for-5 in the final frame, while Powell was 4-for-5 from long range.
- SHU continued its dominance in the paint this season, and finished with a 46-20 advantage down low. It has outscored opponents 294-174 in the paint this season.
- The Hall had a 37-23 rebounding advantage and 10 steals to Columbia's five.
- Columbia led for just 1:35 after taking a 3-0 advantage to begin the game.
- Both Carrington and Delgado shot 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) from the field.
- Delgado, the BIG EAST leader in rebounding (10.2) and offensive rebounds per game (4.3), continued to make his presence known in the paint, and pulled down five offensive and six defensive boards.
- Sophomore Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) totaled nine points on 4-of-5 shooting.
- Junior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) dished out a career-best five assists and pulled down eight rebounds.
- Tonight was the first meeting between Seton Hall and Columbia since 2008.

- Carrington entered Thursday night's contest just one career point behind former teammate and current member of the Brooklyn Nets, Isaiah Whitehead, and moved into 48th place in SHU all-time scoring with 899 career points.
- SHU has now played in 76 consecutive regular season non-conference games without losing two in a row, a streak that dates back to December 2010.
The Pirates head to Honolulu for the Fox Sports Pearl Harbor Invitational and will square off with Hawaii on Dec. 6 at 9:30 p.m. before taking on California on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Tuesday's game will be televised on FS1 with Bill Raftery and Gus Johnson, and streamed on FOX Sports GO. Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the radio call on AM970 The Answer, simulcast on the Pirate Sports Network through the SHU Pirates App.
