Samuels Nabs Freshman Of The Week, Smith Honored

NEW YORK – Women's basketball rookie Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday (Dec. 12). In addition, sophomore guard LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.) earned her second weekly honor roll nod this year. Samuels becomes the third different Pirate to win Freshman of the Week in the last three weeks, joining Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) who picked up the honor on Nov. 28 and Dec. 5, respectively.
Samuels' nod comes after the wing turned in a career performance in The Hall's lone action last week, a 77-59 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday, Dec. 7. In only 13 minutes off the bench, Samuels poured in 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, including five offensive boards. She also added an assist and did not turn the ball over in the effort, notching her first career double-figure scoring effort and tying her personal-best in rebounds.
The Pirates become the first BIG EAST program to have three-straight Freshman of the Week honorees with three different recipients since UConn's Tamika Williams, Ashja Jones and Swin Cash from Nov. 30-Dec. 12, 1998. It also marks the first time in Seton Hall history that three different players have received the honor in the same season and the first time since 1998-99 any program has had three different honorees.
Smith grabbed another honor roll nod after posting her second career double-double against LIU, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The guard shot an efficient 6-for-8 from the floor and dished out five assists while leading all players with four steals in the triumph.
The Pirates return to the hardwood on Tuesday night for a rivalry tilt at Rutgers. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. tip on the Big Ten Network and WSOU, 89.5 FM.
