Carrington Reaches 1,000 Points in Loss at Creighton
12/28/2016 10:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Omaha, Neb. - Junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 27 points and in the process eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Creighton squad that made 57 percent of its field goal attempts, as the No. 10 Bluejays defeated the Pirates, 89-75, Wednesday at CenturyLink Center.
Carrington became the 41st student-athlete in Seton Hall history to reach 1,000 career points. It was his seventh 20-point effort of the season and third in his last four games. It's also the second consecutive game that he's scored 27 points against Creighton, dating back to the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals.
Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) added 24 points and made five of six three-point attempts. Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds to mark his seventh consecutive double-double for the Pirates, who fell to 10-3 on the young season and dropped their BIG EAST opener for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
Maurice Watson, Jr., led Creighton with 21 points and 10 assists.
Turning Point
The Pirates trailed for most of the evening and went into halftime down 50-37. But a spirited 10-1 run to open the second half, punctuated by Rodriguez's jumper in the lane, pulled the Pirates to within four, 51-47.
Rodriguez again made it a four-point game with a jumper at 15:56 that put the score at 53-49, but for every Pirates basket, the Bluejays responded. Justin Patton immediately scored for Creighton to go back up six, the Pirates turned the ball over and Creighton hit a pair of free throws to make it an eight-point game again.
The Pirates hovered around the eight-point deficit mark for a while until Creighton went on an 11-4 run that featured Watson creating a steal and a fast break layup at 7:01 to make it 75-60.
Seton Hall got only as close as nine points the rest of the way.
Inside the Numbers
- Seton Hall shot 46 percent for the game, but allowed Creighton to shoot 57 percent (30-for-53). The Pirates did limit Creighton, the nation's best three-point shooting team, to only 5-for-16 from beyond the arc.
- The Pirates made nine of their 18 three-point attempts.
- The Hall was 14-for-23 from the free throw line compared to Creighton's 24-for-31.
- Seton Hall out-rebounded Creighton, 34-31, and had 11 offensive rebounds.
- The Hall lost the points-in-the-paint battle decisively for the first time this season as Creighton outscored the Pirates there, 42-26.
- Seton Hall committed 18 turnovers that led to 27 Bluejays points.
- Carrington scored 27 points, his seventh 20-point game of the season. He also became the 41st student-athlete all-time in Seton Hall history to score 1,000 career points. He's the first to reach the mark since Fuquan Edwin in 2014.
- Rodriguez connected on a career-high five three-pointers en route to 24 points, his third 20-point game of the season.
- Delgado finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to record his seventh consecutive double-double and ninth of the season. However, Seton Hall's 21-game winning streak when Delgado records a double-double has come to an end. The Pirates are still 27-5 all-time when he double dips.Â
News & Notes
- Seton Hall's all-time series with Creighton is now 10-5 in favor of the Pirates.
- The defeat snapped Seton Hall's five-game winning streak against nationally ranked opponents that dated back to the end of the 2015-16 season.
