Deja Winters Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

NEW YORK – For the second-straight week, a member of the Seton Hall women's basketball team has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday (Dec. 5). This week the honor goes to Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) who averaged 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game over a 1-1 week.
After going for a career-high 16 points off the bench at Princeton on Nov. 30, Winters earned her first career start and finished with eight points, four rebounds and two assists in a comeback win over Wake Forest on Dec. 4. The rookie wing also added two blocks at Princeton and notched a steal in each contest, while not recording a turnover vs. Wake. Against the Demon Deacons, she buried a clutch corner 3-pointer with 1:41 remaining in the fourth quarter to effectively put the contest out of reach.
Winters' selection comes a week after Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) picked up BIG EAST Freshman of the Week laurels, making the Pirates the first team to have two different players win the award in consecutive weeks since UConn's Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley in February 2011. It also marks the first time the Pirates have seen multiple rookies win the award in the same season since Debbie Hartnett and Geraldine Saintilus combined to win it seven times during the 1985-86 season.
Overall during her rookie season Winters is averaging 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, coming off the bench in all but one contest. She is top-10 in the BIG EAST in both 3-point field goals per game (1.9) and blocked shots (1.0/g), also adding nine assists and 11 steals on the year.
Winters and the Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when they welcome LIU Brooklyn to Walsh Gym. The 11:30 a.m. tip will serve as The Hall's "Kids Day presented by Refuel with Chocolate Milk."
