Pirates Claim Blue Raider Bash Title with MTSU Sweep

Seton Hall lost only one set in its three matches of the Blue Raider Bash this weekend.
MURFREESBORO, TENN. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team completed a three-set sweep of Middle Tennessee State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-14), to claim the title of the 2016 Blue Raider Bash on Saturday.

Seton Hall (5-4) lost only one set in victories over Illinois State, Tennessee Tech and host Middle Tennessee State to claim the tournament championship. The Pirates have now won five straight and have their record over .500 for the first time this season.

With the score tied at nine in the first set, the Pirates scored five straight points, and an ace by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) gave them a 14-9 advantage. The lead grew to as many as seven points before The Hall ultimately won the set, 25-22. Thelen and Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) had three kills apiece in the opening frame.

Middle Tennessee State started set two strong, scoring five of the first six points. The Pirates rallied late however, and three straight points capped by a kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) tied the score at 16. The Blue Raiders responded with four of the next five points to claim a 21-17 advantage. The Hall though, had one last rally in them, and ended the set with a clutch 8-1 run. An ace by Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) put the Pirates in set point, and a block by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won set two for Seton Hall, 25-22.

Seton Hall never trailed in set three, scoring six of the first eight points. Another block by Schroeder and Gasser capped a 6-0 run and extended the Pirates' commanding lead to 10 points, 21-11. The Hall had a match-best .333 attack percentage in set three, and it went on to complete the sweep with an easy 25-14 victory.

Inside the Numbers:
- Mason led the Pirates with eight kills. She also had six digs.
- Thelen and Schroeder finished with six kills apiece.
- Fournier recorded a match-high 15 digs to go with five assists.
- Gasser had a team-high four blocks.
