Pirates Fall in Five Sets as Hofstra Rallies
9/13/2016 10:39:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Four Pirates recorded at least 12 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in five sets at Hofstra, 3-2 (22-25, 31-29, 25-17, 22-25, 10-15), on Tuesday.
Â
The first set was one of the closest that Seton Hall has played all season. It featured 13 ties, nine lead changes and neither team had a lead greater than three points. Both teams were strong offensively with Hofstra recording a .429 attack percentage and the Pirates attacking at a .343 clip. They combined for just seven attack errors. With the Pirates leading 20-19, the Pride scored three straight points to take a two point advantage and force a Seton Hall timeout. Twice, The Hall cut the Pride lead to one point down the stretch, but Hofstra held on for a 25-22 victory.
Â
Seton Hall was poised to tie the match at one set apiece with a commanding 24-19 lead at the end of set two. Hofstra rebounded however, and scored six straight points to turn a five-point deficit into a set point of their own. The Pirates rallied three times to tie the set late, and a kill by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tied the score at 29. Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) followed with an ace to put the Pirates again in set point, and a Hofstra attack error gave the set to The Hall, 31-29. In set two alone, Seton Hall had six set points and Hofstra had four.
Â
The Pirates used the momentum gained in a set two victory to jump out to a 12-4 lead in set three. Hofstra never led in set three as the Seton Hall defense held them to a .111 attack percentage. The Pride never cut the lead to fewer than five points as The Hall cruised to a 25-17 set three win.
Â
Turning Point:
Hofstra struck back in set four. Similarly to Seton Hall in the prior set, the Pride led for the vast majority of the set. Leading 14-12, the Pride scored five straight to take a commanding 19-12 advantage. Seton Hall played catch up for the remainder of the set, and ultimately fell, 25-22.Â
Â
Set five was a back-and-forth affair until late when Hofstra assumed control. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave The Hall a 10-9 lead, but the Pride ended the match with a 6-0 run.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
