Seton Hall Falls to Seattle in Rutgers Invite Opener
9/16/2016 11:53:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded a match-high 28 digs, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost in straight sets to Seattle University, 3-0 (26-28, 17-25, 26-28), in its first match of the Rutgers Invitational on Friday.
Â
The first set was a tight affair with neither team grabbing a lead of greater than two points. The score featured nine ties in a set that went beyond 25 points. The Pirates held a slim lead for much of the set, and seemingly took control with a kill by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) which put them in front 23-21. Seattle however, scored three straight to enter set point. Although the Pirates staved off set point on three different occasions, they ultimately fell, 28-26.
Â
Using their set one momentum, Seattle scored five of the first six points of set two, and never looked back. Leading 7-4, the RedHawks went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 15-5 advantage. The Pirates had an attack percentage of only .088 as Seattle took a 2-0 match lead with a convincing 25-17 set two win.
Â
The competitiveness in set three was much closer to that of set one. Trailing 10-9, Seton Hall scored the next four points to take a 13-10 lead. The Hall took a 23-20 lead on a RedHawk ball-handling error, but Seattle stormed back with four straight points to enter match point, 24-23. Back-to-back kills by Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) and Thelen put the Pirates in set point, but Seattle was able to even the set at 25. The Pirates again entered set point with a kill by freshman Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.), but Seattle ended the match with three straight points to win set three, 28-26, and complete the match sweep.
