
Safian, Pirates Fall to No. 12 Creighton, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) had a team-high nine kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 12 Creighton, 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 13-25), on Saturday.

Creighton didn't commit an attack error in the first two sets, collecting a combined 28 kills with no attack errors. For the match, the Bluejays only committed three attack errors total. The Hall didn't go quietly, attacking at a .157 percentage for the match, but Creighton's efficiency proved too much.

Safian had a team-high nine kills to go with three digs. Sophomore Hanna Labanowska (Olszewnica Stara, Poland) finished with four kills and six digs.Â

Seton Hall started strong against Creighton with the teams trading blows early in set one. A kill by Labanowska cut The Hall's deficit to 11-10, but the Bluejays answered with an 8-1 run to give them a commanding 19-11 lead and force a Pirates' time out. A kill by Alexis Opland (Woodbury, Minn.) cut Seton Hall's deficit to 20-13, but Creighton closed out the set with a 5-1 spurt. Seton Hall had a strong offensive set, attacking at a .360 clip, but the Bluejays showed their dominance at .667.

Creighton dominated the second set from the start. With the score tied at four, the Bluejays went on a massive 15-2 run to grab a huge 19-6 advantage. The Pirates outscored Creighton the rest of the way, but couldn't overcome such a sizeable early deficit, and fell, 25-13.Â

The Bluejays never trailed in the final set, racing out to a 10-1 lead. The Creighton onslaught paused for a pair of kills by Safian, but ultimately extended to a 15-3 advantage. Down 20-7, the Pirates scored three of the next four points, and another Safia kill cut their deficit to 21-10, but Creighton closed out the match with a 25-13 set-three victory.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they return to historic Walsh Gymnasium to take on local rival St. John's on Senior Day. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
