Pirates Drop BIG EAST Opener at Villanova
9/20/2016 9:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
VILLANOVA, PA. – Freshman Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had five kills and a match-high seven blocks, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team dropped its BIG EAST opener at Villanova, 3-0 (24-26, 13-25, 21-25), on Tuesday.
Â
Villanova scored four of the first five points and maintained a lead throughout most of the first frame. The Pirates mounted a late charge and a 4-0 run capped by a kill by Gasser gave them their first lead of the set. Another kill by Gasser put the Pirates in set point, 24-23, but the Wildcats regrouped and scored the last three points of the set to win, 26-24.
Â
With Seton Hall ahead 6-5 in set two, Villanova went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 14-7 lead and prompted an early Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates were unable to bounce back and the Wildcats won set two in convincing fashion, 25-13, to take a two-set match advantage. Villanova attacked at a .419 clip in set two and limited the Pirates to just .147.
Â
Seton Hall (6-8, 0-1) was again forced to take an early timeout as the Wildcats scored the first five points of the third set. After Villanova expanded its lead to 23-14, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run to cut the Wildcat lead to three. But Villanova regrouped and was able to get the final point to win, 25-21, and complete the match sweep.Â
