Hennigan, Pirates Edge Butler in Five Sets
9/23/2016 10:19:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) recorded a career-high 23 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team edged Butler in five sets, 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-13), on Friday for its first BIG EAST win of the season.
Â
Seton Hall (7-8, 1-1) got off to a strong start in the match with a convincing, 25-18, first set victory. With the score tied at nine, the Pirates scored four of the next five points to take a 13-10 lead and never trailed again. Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded five of her 10 kills in the first set alone and the Pirates had a match-best .314 attack percentage.
Â
Butler tied the match with a 25-21 victory in a lackluster second set for both teams. In the win, the Bulldogs connected on just a .128 attack percentage, while the Pirates had a paltry -.021.
Â
The Pirates never trailed in set three, racing out to a 7-1 start. A kill by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) saw the lead balloon to nine points at 13-4. The Bulldogs made a late run and cut the Pirate lead to two points, 23-21, but The Hall was able to hold on for the 25-22 victory.Â
Â
Set four was nearly the exact opposite of set three with Butler scoring the first three points and leading the set wire-to-wire. Seton Hall closed to within two points at 19-17, but Butler scored six of the last eight points in a 25-19 set four victory.
Â
Turning Point:
In the decisive fifth set, Seton Hall jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. Butler responded however, with seven straight points to take a 9-6 advantage. The Pirates followed suit with three straight and forced Butler's second time out with the score tied at nine. The Bulldogs quickly scored two points to take an 11-9 lead, but a 5-0 run by Seton Hall put it on the brink of a victory. Butler staved off two match points, but with the score 14-13, Hennigan's sixth kill of the set gave The Hall the win.
