SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tallied a match-high 17 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated Xavier in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22), on Saturday.

Trailing 14-10 in the first set, Seton Hall scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the set at 17. Three points later, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates their first lead of the set, 19-18. With The Hall clinging to a 23-22 advantage, back-to-back kills by Thelen and Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) gave it the victory.

Xavier struck back in a big way in set two. The Musketeers attacked on a .464 percentage and led for the majority of the set in a 25-20 victory to tie the match.

Turning Point:
After a poor defensive showing in set two, the Pirates clamped down in set three holding Xavier to just .073 on its attacks. With the score tied at four, Seton Hall went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead and never trailed again. Thelen again led the team with four kills and the Pirates won in convincing fashion, 25-18, to take a 2-1 match lead.

Seton Hall (8-8, 2-1) never trailed in set four, scoring four of the first five points. Although the score remained close, the Pirates maintained a slim advantage throughout. Xavier cut the Pirate lead to one point late, 22-21, but Seton Hall was able to put the Musketeers away, 25-22.

Inside the Numbers:

Thelen had seven digs to go with her 17 kills.
Schroeder finished with 13 kills, four services aces and a .321 attack percentage.
Sophomore Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) finished with a team-high 28 assists and nine digs.
Hennigan finished with 10 kills.
Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) notched a match-high 24 digs to go with four assists.

News & Notes:

Schroeder reached double-figures in kills for the fifth straight match and the 11th time in 16 matches this season.
The Pirates improves to 2-5 all-time against Xavier.
Seton Hall improves to 4-1 at Walsh Gym in 2016.
Seton Hall improves to 3-2 in four-set matches this season.
