Thelen, Pirates Down Illinois State in Four Sets
9/9/2016 5:13:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MURFREESBORO, TENN. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded a career-high 18 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team opened the Blue Raider Bash with a four-set victory over Illinois State, 3-1 (25-18, 25-11, 17-25, 25-20), on Friday.
Â
Trailing by one, Seton Hall went on a 5-1 run to take an 18-14 lead in set one and never trailed again. Thelen recorded five kills in the opening frame as the Pirates set the tone for the match early in a 25-18 victory.Â
Â
Emboldened by the momentum generated by a set one win, Seton Hall (3-4) charged out of the gate in set two, and scored nine of the first 10 points to take a commanding lead. A block by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) grew the Pirates' lead to 13 points at 16-3, and The Hall rolled from there. Defense dominated set two as the Pirates held the Redbirds to a -.207 attack percentage in a 25-11 win to take a two-set match advantage.
Â
The Pirates dropped set three, 25-17, but were able to bounce back in set four. The Hall again scored five of the first six points of the set to take an early lead and the Redbirds weren't able to fully recover. Leading 23-19, a block by Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) put the Pirates in match point, and Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) followed with a kill to win it.
