Gritty Pirates Force OT, but Lose at Marquette
1/11/2017 11:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MILWAUKEE - Down seven points with 46 seconds to go in regulation, the Seton Hall men's basketball team made an incredible comeback to tie its game with Marquette and send it to overtime, but the Golden Eagles found a way to hold on, defeating the Pirates, 89-86, Wednesday at BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) set a new career high with 30 points, and fellow junior Khadeen Carrington (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in 22 points, including the game-tying jumper with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) delivered his 10th consecutive double-double with 14 points and 19 rebounds, which matched a career high.
Seton Hall (12-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) incredibly had 27 offensive rebounds in this game, 13 coming from Delgado alone.
Marquette (11-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) was led by Markus Howard, who had 22 points and six assists.
Turning Point
The Pirates found themselves trailing by 10, 70-60, with 3:53 to go, by eight, 72-64, with 1:52 remaining and then by seven, 74-67, with 46 seconds left on the clock. Then began a stunning chain of events that finished with a tie game.
After two free throws from Marquette's Duane Wilson, freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) buried a three-pointer to close the gap to 74-70. The Pirates fouled Haanif Cheatham, who made only one of two free throws. On the other end, Carrington drew a foul and made both his free throws to cut the deficit to three, 75-72, with 33 seconds to go.
It was a five-point game with only 30 seconds left when Carrington drilled a three-pointer to make it 77-75, Marquette. With 16 seconds on the clock, the Pirates fouled Cheatham again, and this time Cheatham missed both attempts, giving The Hall a chance to tie or win.
In-bounding with 5.5 seconds left, the ball went to Carrington who took one dribble, pulled up and swished the bucket for a 77-77 tie and overtime.
In the extra frame, the Pirates were done in by free throw shooting as they only went 3-for-8 there. Jajuan Johnson seemingly made the dagger three-pointer with 1:58 to go to make it 84-80, but Rodriguez quickly answered with a three of his own to again make it a one-point game, 84-83.
The big sequence proved to be on the offensive end. Down two, 85-83, Delgado drew a foul and missed both free throws. However, Rodriguez grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the tip-in. Then Delgado again got the offensive board, but a scrum for the ball led to a turnover. On the other end, the Golden Eagles got two free throws from Katin Reinhardt to go back up four.
Rodriguez again got the Pirates to one with his last three-pointer of the game, but an attempt to draw a turnover only led to two more Marquette free throws. Powell's tying three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.
