Comeback Attempt Falls Short for The Hall at PC
1/14/2017 3:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PROVIDENCE - The Seton Hall men's basketball team climbed back from a 16-point deficit to draw even with Providence late in the second half, but Kyron Cartwright's three-point play with 32 seconds remaining pushed the Friars past the Pirates, 65-61, Saturday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Seton Hall (12-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) was led by junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), who delivered 20 points and hit three consecutive game-tying field goals in the final 2:45 of the game. Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) posted his 11th consecutive double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, surpassing Eddie Griffin, who had 10 consecutive double-doubles in 2001.
Providence (12-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) received 22 points rom Rodney Bullock and 20 points and eight assists from Cartwright.
Turning Point
Though Seton Hall trailed for the bulk of the contest, the Pirates first made a furious 10-0 rally to go into halftime only down six, and then found a way to tie the game with just under three minutes remaining.
Rodriguez was in the middle of the comeback, first dishing to Delgado for a layup and then connecting on a three-pointer off a pass from junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to knot the score at 57-57 with 2:45 to go.
The Pirates had a chance to take the lead when strong defense created a turnover near midcourt. Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up the steal, but was called for a charge on his way to basket. Providence responded with an Emmitt Holt layup to go back up by two before Rodriguez again delivered a jumper to make it 61-61.
With 32 seconds remaining, Cartwright created space off his defender and hit a mid-range jumper and drew a foul. He completed the three-point play with a free throw to go up 64-61.
The Pirates had two looks at the basket on the ensuing possession, but missed. Providence got the ball back and made one of two free throws at the line to seal the win.
