Pirates Fall At Xavier on Wednesday Night
1/4/2017 8:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (8-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) saw a spirited fourth-quarter rally fall short in a 72-64 setback at Xavier (10-5, 2-2) on Wednesday night at the Cintas Center. Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 20 points in the setback, while Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) tied her career-high with 17.
The Pirates ran into a red-hot shooting Musketeer squad in the first half, as XU knocked down nine 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to build a double-digit lead at the break. The Pirates used the 3-pointer themselves to rally back in the fourth, but couldn't cut what was a 21-point deficit closer than eight in the final frame. Raeshaun Gaffney led Xavier with 33 points, including 20 in the first half.
Turning Points
After a back-and-forth start, Xavier rattled off a 9-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 20-7 lead before a Hilaire floater prior to the end of the period. The Musketeers kept that double-digit lead through the second quarter, swelling their advantage to 36-14 midway through the second.
The Pirates rallied back, not allowing a field goal for over five minutes and getting the contest back to 10 thanks to a 13-1 run into the final minute of the quarter. With a chance to pull back within single digits, Xavier came up with a late steal before Gaffney knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the first half and gave XU a 40-27 lead going into the break.
The Musketeers kept their double-digit lead throughout the second half, going up as many as 21 in the fourth quarter before a spirited Seton Hall rally. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Lundberg and JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) capped a 21-8 run to cut the lead to 62-54 before the fourth quarter media stoppage. After the break, Gaffney came up with a three-point play to push the lead back to double-digits with under three minutes to play and effectively ice the contest.
