SEEKONK, MASS. – Freshman Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) won a playoff over teammate Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) to claim the individual championship of the 2017 Brown Bear Fall Invitational after both golfers finished tied atop the leader board. They also helped lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to the team title on Monday.
Kness won the title on the fourth playoff hole to claim her first tournament championship in only five collegiate tournaments. She has played in the second-fewest tournaments before claiming her first victory in Seton Hall history. Teammate Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) won the 2014 St. John's Invitational in only her fourth tournament.
It's the first time that two Pirates have finished tied atop of the individual leader board since Erin McClure and Ali Kruse tied for first place at the 2015 Rio Verde Invitational.
Kness fired three birdies in route to an even-par, 71, on Monday to finish the tournament with a 1-under-par, 70-71-141. Sager also had three birdies in round two and completed the two-day event with an identical score to Kness'. They set a new Seton Hall record for lowest par-71 two-round score and finished the tournament two strokes ahead of teammate Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio), who placed third.
A day after firing the lowest single-round score in Seton Hall history, the Pirates collectively, shot only one stroke higher on Monday for the second-lowest score ever. The Hall completed the event with a 1-over-par, 284-285-569, besting second place St. John's by 34 strokes for its 11th team victory in the history of the program and the first since winning the William & Mary Invitational to begin the fall season last year.
Seton Hall's 1-over-par, 569, is a new school record for a par-71 tournament.
Lizzie Win had the top individual round of the Pirates in round two. The sophomore rode a trio of birdies to a 1-under-par, 70. For the tournament, she finished in third place with a career-low 1-over-par, 73-70-143. It's Win's sixth career top-10 finish and third career top-5.
Pantelas shot a 2-over-par, 73, on Monday. She tied for sixth place for the tournament with a 3-over-par, 72-73-145. It's her 11th career top-10 finish, which ranks fourth-most in Seton Hall history.
Sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) shot a 5-over-par, 76, in the final round. She finished the tournament tied for 12th place with a 6-over-par, 72-76-148.
For a second straight tournament, the Pirates competed with their entire roster. Three Seton Hall golfers competed as individuals, Gianna Tomeo (Bradenton, Fla.), Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) and Jamie Greene (Troy, Mich.).
Tomeo improved three strokes on Monday, and finished the tournament with a career-best 19-over-par, 82-79-161. Fouse shaved a stroke off her first round score, and finished the two-day event with a 23-over-par, 83-82-165.
