Springfield, Mass. - The preseason recognitions continue to roll in for Seton Hall senior center Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic), who has been placed on the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Watch List, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Friday. Delgado, who was a top-five finalist for the award in 2017, is one of 20 college basketball centers on the list.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award will be narrowed down to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 6, 2018. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
"Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's talent and accolades are unparalleled when it comes to centers in college basketball," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "With the legacy he built at UCLA and then as a professional, is it only fitting that we honor the top collegiate centers with an award bearing his name."Â
Delgado, who was placed on the preseason All-BIG EAST first team on Wednesday and has been deemed a preseason All-American by multiple media outlets, is the NCAA's active career leader in rebounds (1,053) and double-doubles (50) and is coming off winning the 2017 NCAA rebounding title (13.1/game). In 2016-17, he grabbed over 200 more rebounds more than anyone else in the BIG EAST, set the conference's single-season rebounding record (14.1/game) and became the first BIG EAST player to ever record 20 rebounds or more in back-to-back conference games. He was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection, a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and the recipient of the 2017 Haggerty Award as the Met Writers Player of the Year. Delgado is one of only five Seton Hall student-athletes to ever record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career, and he is poised to finish his career second only to Hall of Famer Walter Dukes in career rebounds.
Previous winners of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award include Przemek Karnowski, Gonzaga (2017), Jakob Poeltl, Utah (2016) and Frank Kaminsky, Wisconsin (2015).Â
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played for legendary coach and Hall of Famer John Wooden at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1966-1969. He is a three-time NCAA Champion who earned numerous accolades including three-time Final Four Most Outstanding Player, three-time National College Player of the Year and three-time Consensus First-Team All-American (1967-1969).
