Kness Paces Pirates to Ninth Place After Round One
10/6/2017 7:32:00 PM | Women's Golf
NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Freshman Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) fired a 3-over-par, 74, in Friday's first round of the 2017 Yale Women's Intercollegiate and has guided the Seton Hall women's golf team to a ninth place team standing with two rounds remaining.
Kness had double-bogeyed her first and last holes of the day, but offset them with four birdies. She is currently tied for 18th place overall. Kness trails the individual leader, Stirling's Hazel MacGarvie by six strokes.
Collectively, the Pirates shot an 18-over-par, 302, in the first round and trail the team leader, Stirling, by 17 strokes.
Sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) is currently only one stroke behind Kness following a 4-over-par, 75. Staudt had three birdies on the day, and used a strong back nine to push her to a solid score. She was only 1-over-par in her final nine holes.
Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) is only one stroke behind Staudt after a 5-over-par, 76. Win only had one birdie, but she also only had one double-bogey. Her strong effort was due in large part to 12 pars in the first round. As opposed to Staudt, Win's excellence came on the front nine. She started the day only 1-over-par at the turn.
Senior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) fired a 6-over-par, 77, on Friday. The highlight of her round was an eagle on the par-5, 16th hole.
Sophomore Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) rounded out the Pirates' team scoring with an 8-over-par, 79. She finished her round strong with four straight pars.
A trio of Pirates also made the trip to compete as individuals. Junior Jamie Greene (Troy, Mich.) matched her career-low round with a 7-over-par, 78. Senior Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) and Gianna Tomeo (Bradenton, Fla.) each finished just one stroke behind Greene with a pair of 8-over-par, 79's.
