LOS ANGELES -Â Seton Hall men's basketball senior center Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) has notched one final preseason National Player of the Year honor; the defending NCAA rebounding champion has been placed on the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Preseason Top 50 making him an early front-runner for college basketball's most prestigious individual honor.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2018 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason list are eligible for the Wooden Award midseason list, late season list and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players, who have been qualified as meeting the standards set forth by Coach Wooden and the Wooden Award Steering Committee. Voting will open prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2018 John R. Wooden Award will be presented during the ESPN College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's on Friday, April 6, 2018.
Delgado has already been decorated with numerous preseason distinctions, including preseason All-BIG EAST first team, the 2018 Naimith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch Lists and preseason All-America recognition by multiple media outlets. He is the NCAA's active career leader in rebounds (1,074) and double-doubles (52), the only active Div. I student-athlete with at least 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds and is coming off winning the 2017 NCAA rebounding title (13.1/game). In 2016-17, he grabbed over 200 more rebounds more than anyone else in the BIG EAST, set the conference's single-season rebounding record (14.1/game) and became the first BIG EAST player to ever record 20 rebounds or more in back-to-back conference games. He was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection, a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and the recipient of the 2017 Haggerty Award as the Met Writers Player of the Year. Delgado is one of only five Seton Hall student-athletes to ever record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career, and he is poised to finish his career second only to Hall of Famer Walter Dukes in career rebounds.
